Planning to Move? Find Out the Best time of Year to Move

Understanding the best time of year to move is a small portion of the many other considerations that come along for the ride, such as: the weather in your old location or new location will not permit you to move; there may be a project at work that needs attention before you can plan your move. When planning to move, on one knows your situation better than you.
Children in School
If you have children in school, you have to work within their school schedule. Summer break and the months where your children are “off track” will give you the time needed to move and the time your children need to say their goodbyes to friends and teachers. Telling your children about the move a month or two before the actual move date prepares them for goodbyes. You want to avoid springing the news on your children at the last minute.
Find out the school schedule for the new school your children will attend and try and arrive at your new destination a few weeks before school starts. Doing this will give you time as the parent to find out the rules of the new school and also prepare your children for their first day at their new school. It will also give your children the chance to get to know the neighborhood and the neighborhood kids that will most likely go to the same school. Figure out if it’s better to let your children walk to school, take the school bus, or be picked up and dropped by you or a trusted person. Most schools have their teachers return to school one to two weeks before the students actually arrive creating a great opportunity for you and your children to visit the campus and get to know some, if not all, of the faculty.
The Best Seasons to Move
Most moves seem to happen during the summer months. Your children are out of school, the weather conditions are permitting, and friends and family have are more available. Many people take advantage of this time of the year so moving companies are usually more booked solid for the whole season. Checking moving company schedules and their summer rates will help you to better assess whether or not you’re able to plan a move. If you don’t have any luck securing moving services, renting your own truck can be just as good. Booking in advance with a truck rental company helps you to secure your truck before the peak of the season arrives and the selection is limited.
Climate changes can have damaging effects on your household items. Things that are made of wood may swell or crack from the climate changes. Taking a wooden side table from a warm climate into a colder climate could cause the table to warp or crack beyond repair. So take the seasons into consideration when moving if you want your items to survive the elements. The climate that you currently live in live may have moisture in the air as opposed to the climate you’re moving to that has dry air and sees less precipitation throughout the year than your previous climate. Weather conditions like this can also have devastating effects on your furniture as well. Understanding these details will allow your items to survive or you may consider getting rid of the item before the moving day. Holding a garage sale or donating these items to charity is a great way to get rid of items that will not make the trip.
The winter and fall seasons are great times to move if you’re looking to save money on your move. These times of year are not considered peak times in the moving industry since most don’t plan moves during these seasons and weather conditions can make the moving process more difficult. Rates usually drop and specials are introduced to entice people to use their services during these down times. This is where the advantage is passed onto you the customer.
Moving on Holidays
Moving on holidays can be an uphill battle. Most holidays were designed for special gatherings with family and friends. Because of this, many moving companies have little to no movers available to provide the services you need. Your best bet is to schedule your move AFTER any major holidays and use the holiday as a stage for your last goodbyes to your family and friends. Many of our holidays are celebrated with home and yard decorations. So arriving while most of your new neighbors are packing up their holiday decorations may be an advantage to introduce yourself since they will be outside.
Moving is a delicate process with many things to consider in order to have a perfectly planned move. You know your situation better than anyone which means you know the advantages and limitations you’re working with. Relocating to a new state means that new surroundings and opportunities are around you. Arriving before your children have to report to school or you reporting to work will help to create a comfort for both your new neighborhood and city.© Capitol North American, 2012. northAmerican is a registered trademark of North American Van Lines, Inc., and is used under license.
