Tips on Moving Your Flat Screen Television

Posted By Capitol North American on 2010-11-09 @ 10:07:00

The modern design of television differs from its earlier designs in the 1980’s. Instead of the bulky units most of us grew up watching, there’s now a more space saving unit that sits alone or mounts on a wall. Moving and relocating modern day televisions are much easier now than 20 years ago due to lighter materials, thinner design and better balance. New generation T.V.’s may not be light as a feather, but you’ll have an easier time moving this type of unit than the ones that were originally designed to sit in your living room. Here, you will learn the proper way to pack and move your flat screen television to avoid any damage during the packing, loading, and transporting process.

Packing up Your Flat Screen TV

The best way to move your flat screen television is to use the original manufacture’s box, including the foam blocks included to cushion and protect the TV. Often people have tried to pack up their flat screen televisions only to find that it’s been damaged during the packing or transportation part of the move. Using inferior preparation techniques will ALWAYS back-fire. If the original box is unavailable, you can purchase specialty boxes from your local moving company who sells moving supplies. As popularity for flat screen televisions increased, moving companies who offer moving supplies, began to carry special boxes designed for transporting your flat screen in one working piece.

Other Ways to Secure You Flat Screen for Moving

What if you do not have the original packaging your flat screen came in or you cannot secure a special moving box from your local moving supply store? Again, go to your local moving supply store and secure some wrapping foam or bubble wrap, packing or painters tape, and a few pieces of flat cardboard big enough to cover your television’s screen. Wrap the foam or bubble wrap around the unit at least two times tight enough to where it doesn’t fall off. Make sure that the end of your wrap is at the edge of your unit and not directly on the screen. Tape the edges and prepare to place your cardboard over the screen of the television. Once you’ve attached the cardboard to the front of your television, tape the edges to keep it in place. If you have access to any heavy duty moving pads similar to the ones moving companies use, wrap your television in these after you’ve prepared it with the foam/bubble wrap cardboard and tape. An old quilt may make a good temporary substitute.

Now you’re ready to move your flat screen TV. Keeping it in an upright position is the ideal way to transport the unit. In the event you have to place your TV flat, you should place screen down on a cushioned surface and NEVER pack or place ANYTHING on top of it unless it’s more padding for protection.
