Using Garage Sales and Other Avenues to Get Rid of Unwanted Items

One of the issues people face when moving to a new home are the unwanted items they have accumulated over time. These are things you may not use anymore, forgot about, will not work or fit in your new home, or you are just ready for something new. The attention is usually not given to these items until it’s time to change locations. A great rule of thumb is if you haven’t used it in 6 months to a year, then you don’t need it anymore. One man’s trash is another man’s treasure.
Here are some steps to take to help get rid of the miscellaneous build-up of items before your big moving day.
Garage/Yard Sale: Some people love to drive around spotting a garage or yard sale. They love to sift through the collections and see what unique items they can add to their home. Holding a garage/yard sale is a great way to get rid of unwanted items before you move. Pricing to sell quickly, instead of focusing on a profit, usually helps to sell most, if not all of your items in one day. Most garage/yard sales occur on a Saturday since many people have the weekend off and more free time on their hands.
Try having your garage/yard sale one to two weeks before your actual move date. That way you’ll have time to sell everything you don’t plan to take with you or make other arrangements.
Selling Your Stuff Online: If the traditional garage/yard sale doesn’t produce the results you were looking for, try selling your items online. This can actually go hand and hand with your garage/yard sale. People who respond to your online ads have a chance to come by and inspect the item. Popular online outlets for these types of sales are Craigslist.org, BackPage.com, and OLX.com. For the best results, we recommend taking pictures of the items up for sale and place them in the online ads that you run. Leave a reliable contact number for those who discover the ad to call and inquire. Persons looking for these types of ads are most likely in the buying mood. So if you receive responses from these ads, you’ll be more than likely to have a sale if the price is right.
Donate to Charities: Charities are always accepting donations. This is a great way to let others benefit from the items that you no longer have a need for. There are many charities around the Las Vegas area, and your own church may accept donations as well. You can also find donation bins placed in various strip mall parking lots, or donation trailers where volunteers are there to assist you. By donating your gently used goods, you are actually killing three birds with one stone. Your donation is a tax write off, you’re helping out others that may be less fortunate, and you’re discarding your unwanted, but usable items without actually throwing them away.
Give Away to Friends and Family: Sometimes, the best way to get rid of your unwanted stuff is to simply give it friends and family. Many people ask their loved ones to help them move or to pack up their belongings for the movers to pick up. This is the perfect opportunity to give away what you don’t want to take with you.
Now you moving day has just gotten easier. You don’t have to worry about moving your extra clutter to your new home, and you’ve sold or given it all to people who really wanted or needed it.
