Moving From a Bigger Home to a Smaller Home

Posted By Capitol North American on 2010-08-09 @ 10:41:00

The main issue when moving from a bigger home to a smaller one is that you can’t fit everything you had in your new home from your old home. You may have bigger couches, bigger beds, and a bigger dining room table that occupied space accordingly. So the question is: How will I fit all of my furniture in a much smaller place?

As mentioned in an earlier blog post about Garage sales and disposing of unwanted items, you may want to hold a garage/yard sale, place items online for sale, donate to local charities, or give the stuff to family and friends. But before you take this course of action, you should walk through your new home and take measurements of your new space. Then return to your old home and measure your furniture to see if it will fit in your new home, or if you have to get rid of it. If your home is in a different state or simply too far to make the trip, ask the old owner, real estate agent, or your new landlord to provide you with the square footage of the home and the rooms where these items may go. Then compare the measurements of your new home to the measurements of your furniture to see what goes and what can’t make the trip. This not only makes your move easier, but it also eliminates the hassle of finding out certain pieces of furniture don’t fit into your new home until it’s already there. So make your move easier on yourself and take the proper steps to assess the situation before you make any decisions on what you can and cannot move.
