Tips on Scheduling Your Interstate Move

Posted By Capitol North American on 2010-09-16 @ 12:32:00

An interstate move can happen for several reasons; you have a new job, you want to be closer to family and friends, or you just want a change of scenery. Either way, you need to plan your interstate move accordingly. Here are a few tips to help the interstate moving process easier.

Find an Affordable but Reliable Moving Company

When getting ready to move, the first thing you need to do is contact several moving companies offering the services you need. Be sure to give each company the same information regarding the services that you would like for your move, that way you can accurately compare the estimates you receive from each company. Check out the credentials of each company you research and any reviews from past customers if you can find any. You can usually find reviews on the moving company’s web site or you can check reviews web sites such as Rip off Report, Yelp, Merchant Circle, or LasVegas.Net

Types of Moving Companies

These questions are important to answer before the big day: What type of moving service are you looking for? Do you need a full service company? Do you need a moving company that just provides storage space and transportation? Do you plan to rent a truck and take on the whole move yourself? Full service companies can provide you with everything from packing and loading services, to transportation and unpacking services. Most full service moving companies even offer storage services if needed.

Self service moves put in charge of the whole move. Self service means you pack, load, unload, and unpack your belongings yourself, and the transportation company provides storage and transportation services, you also provide your own packing and moving materials. Often, you can purchase them from your chosen provider.

You can also cut out the middle person and move your household items yourself by renting a moving truck. You’ll be responsible for packing up your household items, loading them onto your moving truck, and transporting them to your next destination.  Be sure when using this option you rent a truck large enough to accommodate your belongings and that you have assistance from family and friends to help both at your origin and destination locations.

Make Sure They Are Insured

When checking the moving company’s credentials, make sure you find out whether or not the company is properly licensed and insured. In the event that your items are damaged in the moving and transportation process, the moving company can replace and/or pay for any damages or loses you may encounter. If the company is not insured you may want to select another. In many cases, the moving company may provide different levels of coverage. Be sure to check with your homeowners or renters policy to see if you have any coverage through them.  Your mover will also be able to assist you in understanding the different coverage’s they offer, so that you can make the best choice for you.

Moving with Children and Pets

Interstate moves can be frustrating to children and pets. Our blogs on “Moving with Your Pets” and, “Tips on Relocating with Children,” offer great tips to make your move easier when children or pets are involved. Both write-ups give detail on how to comfort both your children and pets while making a long move and how to soften the blow of getting used to new surroundings.

Review Contract for a Binding Estimate

Since you’re planning an interstate move, you want to make sure everything is legit. This includes the original quote given to you by your moving company. Using a moving company who will send an estimator to your home is a great choice. This way, a proper walk-through can take place and your estimate will be more accurate.

Some companies like to seduce their customers with an affordable quote, then turn around and charge you much more for the move. Make sure your contract has a binding estimate included. This prevents your chosen moving company from giving you an outrageous final price and binds the moving company to the original quoted price provided you did not add any additional services that were not included in the original estimate.

The three things that most people want when hiring a moving company is reliability, honesty, and the assurance that their items will make it to the next destination safe and undamaged. If you choose the proper moving company, you’ll have little to no worries at all.
